Why is there higher demand for DALI with the introduction of LED technology? It’s simple. If you want to dim LED lights, you need an electronic control device.
Former that means conventional lights so far were equipped with illuminants such as light bulbs, halogen lamps or fluorescent tubes resp. fluorescent lamps. The last ones were not that suited anymore for dimming, but off-the-shelf wall dimmers could be used with phase angle resp. section control via Triac or MOSFET.
These were produced in the ages of light bulbs/halogen lamps and were perfect for changing the brightness.
For the operation of LEDs a constant current is necessary that prevents overloading of the LED. This special electronic ballast (commonly referred to as LED EVG) needs 230 V line voltages on the input side and has not use for the “bent” alternating current sinus of a dimmer.
By still trying this, dependent on the dimmer and LED driver, the following can happen:
Right. These contain a LED driver that was especially created for the operation with wall dimmers. Here especially the TCI Jolly MD dimmable should be mentioned, that depending on the jumper setting can be dimmed with reverse phase control dimmer besides 1-10V- or button operation. The manufacturer successfully ensured a broad compatibility. But also here it’s not possible to evenly adjust the light down to 0% brightness. The reason for that is that even the driver needs still some residual voltage for safe operation.
DALI as control bus for transferring diverse signals of lights that are centrally plugged as “broadcast command” or specifically addressable, enables comfortable control of the lights. Naturally complete dimming of the brightness via the usual scope is also part of that.
Besides the dim function the control of LED lights via DALI even enables the option to program every single light individually and put them together in different groups so that the planning of integrated circuits for single light switches is not necessary anymore. This can also be adjusted anytime afterwards individually for the particular situation. Open space offices or warehouses are a good example where the lighting often has to be changed due to organizational reasons.
In short, LED lights only dim DALI. This is easy with for example an LED driver DALI
Is a building newly installed it is advised to plan the lighting installation including DALI bus from the start. This is easy. Instead of three-wired cord, now five-wired cord is laid universally. It doesn’t matter what you connect to it or if you use it at full volume. With DALI bus you’re entirely flexible. Due to the “slow” data stream a “chaotic” cable run is possible. That means you don’t have to watch out for star, circle or chain wiring. Just as the 230V wiring, you can wire as you wish. Even the polarity of the DALI wire is immaterial.
Who really wants to open and wire the walls of a beautiful old villa while changing to LED with DALI. Even surface mounted wiring is not desired.
For these cases there are Enocean radio solutions that enable a comfortable and fast installation without big additional wiring from the light switches to the LED light via a gateway with integrated DALI controller.
The analogue control via a 1-10V potentiometer is still used. The ballast in the light receives a voltage between 1V and 10V at a special control input and by this regulates the brightness of the lamp. This 1-10V input at the EVG is potential-free. Here they are still distinguished between active and passive connections.
DALI is attractive again. The demand for DALI devices, especially for the DALI USB adapter as connector between LED lights and the computer with DALI master PC software, is increasing. If you want to do more than just switch lights on and off, DALI nowadays is the standard solution.
