Wireless DALI Integration with wDALI-2 Bridge

The module is connected via Bluetooth 5 to the wDALI-2 BT5 Bridge, which is itself connected to the classic DALI bus. This architecture enables remote control of up to 10 coupled devices per bridge with full DALI compatibility. Communication is encrypted and based on the Bluetooth 5 Long Range protocol, with a range of 8–12 m in buildings and up to 150 m in open field depending on building structure.

Constant Voltage PWM Architecture for LED Modules

The dimmer is designed as a constant voltage dimmer (CV) for LED modules that rely on PWM control. The four separate outputs (LED+, R-, G-, B-, W-) enable independent control of the red, green, blue and white channels. The PWM frequency can be selected between 122 Hz and 1 kHz to ensure optimal compatibility with various LED types and to minimize visible flicker.

Dual Operating Modes for Flexible DALI Control Concepts

In DT8 mode, a single DALI address controls both brightness and color. In Colour&Dim mode, a second address is used for separate brightness control, while the first address handles color values exclusively. This enables integration into existing DALI systems with different requirements for control comfort and address efficiency.

Intelligent Current Distribution and Thermal Management

With a maximum input current of 8 A and an input voltage range of 12–48 V DC, the total current can be freely distributed across the four output channels without requiring separate current limiting per channel. The device is designed for operating temperatures up to 60 °C and features a rated temperature of 75 °C, ensuring reliable service life of over 100,000 hours.

Calibration and Configuration Options

The DALI-Cockpit software enables LED calibration to match multiple modules to uniform color values and brightness levels. The behavior after power restoration (power-on behavior) is configurable: the device can be reset to a defined value (0–100%) or restored to the last saved value, enabling flexible energy management and scene storage provisions.

The wDALI-2 BT5 RGBW LED Dimmer CV is offered as an 8 A variant (Article No. 86458509-BT). Compatible variants are the wDALI-2 BT5 Wireless Bridge (Article No. 89453348) and the wDALI-2 BT5 Bridge with integrated PS20 power supply (Article No. 89453348-PS) as transmitter units.

Typical Application Areas

Typical application scenario: A hotel integrates several RGBW LED modules in luminaires in various rooms. All dimmers are coupled with a centrally placed wDALI-2 BT5 Bridge via Bluetooth, which is connected to the DALI bus of the lighting management system. The lighting designer programs scenes in DALI-Cockpit: for example, morning scenario (bright, neutral white light 0–20%) and evening scenarios (warm color temperature with 50–80% brightness). When usage time changes, the system automatically sends the corresponding DALI commands; all coupled modules are dimmed and color-shifted simultaneously. A second use case is exhibition lighting in museums: here, precise dimming values in the range 0.1–5% for sensitive art objects are stored and retrievable via scene recall, without requiring separate console wiring to the luminaires.
