Which LED transformer is correct?

The large number of technical data and the resulting large selection of LED transformers often leads to a desperate and sometimes unsuccessful search. This article should help you to find the right transformer.

We differentiate between constant current sources = LED drivers and constant voltage sources = LED transformers (e.g. with 12V or 24V voltage output for e.g. LED strips.

What parameters are required to select an LED constant voltage source?

LED transformers transform 230V mains voltage into 12V or 24V direct voltage (DC) or in case of use for retrofit LED lamps (e.g. MR16 GU5.3) into 12V AC.
The most important parameter for the selection is the operating voltage for the operation of your LED modules or LED strips.
What power should the transformer be designed for? This can be calculated by the number and individual power of the LED module or LED strips to be operated in parallel. For the LED strips, the specification of watt / meter x length applies.
Should the LED transformer be dimmable?
There are various technologies: phase dimming / triac; 1-10V; DALI; Touch dimming or even radio (e.g. Casambi)
A dimming module is also often installed downstream of a transformer. Especially when controlling via RGBW or Tunable White.
Final housing type and size? Suitability for moisture (IP protection), as well as for installation in a luminaire housing or "free-flying" for e.g. Ceiling installation with strain relief.
Of course, parameters such as operating temperature and operating voltage range.
