How many Lux are appropriate?

For the lighting of indoor and outdoor workplaces there are guideline values derived from European standards.

"Illumination of indoor workplaces", EN 12464-1 (June 2011)
"Illumination of outdoor worklplaces", EN 12464-2 (October 2007)

Examples of indoor guidelines:

  • Break rooms: 100 Lux
  • Bakeries: 300-500 Lux
  • Study (office): 500 Lux, at least at the desk
  • Sales areas: 300 Lux
  • Classrooms, seminar rooms: 300 Lux
  • Lecture halls: 500 Lux
  • Corridors: 100 Lux
  • Examination rooms (general lighting): 500 Lux

Examples for outdoor guidelines:

  • Walkways, exclusively for pedestrians: 5 Lux
  • Parking spaces (low, medium, high traffic): 5, 20, 20 Lux
  • Covered platforms, long-distance traffic: 100 Lux
  • Construction sites (construction areas): 50 Lux

Luxmeter - more than just an illuminance meter

There are lux meters that are designed solely for measuring luminous intensity. However, there are also devices that are true all-round talents and equipped with extensive measurement parameters.
These include temperature, air pressure, sound, and humidity.
To make your decision a little easier, there is an overview of the respective functions of the all-round lux meter or the pure lux meter.
